If you are a senior citizen, here are some tips for you before you start!
You should check with your doctor before starting any exercise program, especially if you have family with history of heart disease. It’s a good idea to have a physical examination and to take a graded exercise test before you start.
You should choose repetitive, rhythmic activity that will challenge the circulatory system and exercise at a level that is suitable for you.
Choose an activity that is fun and that you can do all year round.
Always wear comfortable clothing and footwear for the humidity, temperature and activity.
If walking is the activity for you, then make sure you walk in a well-lit area, on a smooth surface and somewhere where there isn’t a lot of traffic.
Find a friend to join you, together you can stay motivated and you will be able to support each other
You must take extra time to warm up and cool down as muscular adaptations and elasticity slows down with age. Make sure you stretch slowly.
If you are a sedentary person, please make sure you start off at a low intensity and progress gradually.
If you are exercising for more than 30 minutes, then try and drink water every 15 minutes, especially when exercising in warm, humid conditions. As you age, your sense of thirst tends to decrease and you can’t completely rely on your body telling you, you need water
Please remember to follow these tips and most of all, enjoy yourself
